TASTY TALK: HARLEY PASTERNAK, TRAINER TO THE STARS

1. You’re the most sought-after trainer among celebrities.  What are your top 3 tips for new moms to get back into shape?

It's a marathon, not a sprint.  Don't try to get back in your best shape overnight.  My 5 Factor plan is a sustainable lifestyle that focuses on 5 simple meals a day and as little as 25 minute workouts daily.

2. What’s your ideal meal?  Do you like to cook?

My ideal meal has 5 key compnenets
    -low fat protein
    -healthy carb
    -5-10g fiber
-healthy fat/ or the absence of unhealthy fat
    -non sugar beverage

I love to cook.  All the recipes in my books take 5 or less minutes to prep and 5 or less key ingredients

3. In your book, you allow yourself one cheat day a week.  What do you splurge on?!  What day of the week?

For me, its usually Sat night dinner and Sunday brunch. I love pizza and red wine for dinner and a great big waffle with nutella for brunch

4. Do you recycle or eat organic?
Yes I recycle.  No, I'm not too big on organic.

5. It seems you have spent most of your adult life promoting health and fitness.  As a child, was this always your ambition?

I was a hockey player in Canada grwoing up.  I started working out to get stronger for hockey.  I played Hockey in University and studied kinesiology and nutrition, then went to grad school for nutrition and worked as a nutrition and exercise scientist for the military.  All the while, I had a personal training biz that catered to the actors who came to Toronto from Hollywood to shoot films.  My actual goal was to become a doctor, but, I really "fell into" fitness and nutrition.

6. With childhood obesity on the rise, could the 5-Factor Diet and 5-Factor Fitness programs be applied to children as well?

Absolutely!!!!!
It reallly is a moderate lifestyle that children and adult alike can do from their youth till their golden age. There is nothing controversial about the plan, no pills, powders, or potions. No "cutting out food groups" or weighing or counting calories. So, no guilt or failure.

7. You have a very busy career that always keeps you on the go.  What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?

Not sure, I'm always working. This week, for example, I flew to NYC on Sunday to do the Today Show  Monday morning, then flew straight back to LA to see clients Tues and Wed, then flew off to Australia Wed night to see a client Fri, Sat, and Sun....then flew back to LA Monday morning only to see clients all day upon landing.  So I guess, I would say....I spleep when im not working.

8. What do you find to be the most rewarding aspect of your career?

Making people healthier and happier, and due to the high profile of my clients, having the world celebrate their health success.

9. On what occasions are you "wasty"?  (NOT hip, green, planet-friendly)

My gas guzzling SUV.  But, I only drive 3000 miles per year!

10. Ok, let’s get to the real question…  Our tasty readers want to know: are there any celebrity diet secrets that aren’t in your book?!

hahahahahaha.  If I told you, they wouldn't be a secret!! No, everything is online at www.5factordiet.com
