MY MOM AND I

- JoAnna Ross Contributing Writer

I love my mom. I can’t say that it has been easy raising me though and I push her to the limit all the time. As I get older that doesn’t happen nearly as much as my 18 year old rebel, I don’t need a family, days. I moved out of my parent’s house after High School and thought I had something to prove. As I settle in to my mature life, I use that term loosely because sometimes I wonder. The one thing that has never changed between my mom and I is her love and support.

I just went to meet my mom for lunch last week. I showed up crying hysterically because of a guy. She was having lunch with 3 other friends. I was so embarrassed that I couldn’t keep it together but I guess if you can’t break down to your mom who can you. It is just not my style to need help but this particular day this particular moment all I wanted was my mom to hold me and tell me everything is going to be all right. I have a therapist that tells me I am going to be fine but it is not the same. I love that I can appreciate that now, the comfort a parent can give in trying time. I am so grateful to still have her. As we all were sitting there talking, me crying some more throughout the 3-course lunch these women couldn’t have been more kind, loving and compassionate to a girl who they only heard about. (I just moved back to NYC so I have not met these women) They are obviously all mothers too. So I stop crying and my mother starts to tell the women about my accomplishments and me. I just came out with a yoga DVD for kids called Yoga By The Dozen. YBTD is for children ages 2-6. Check out the website www.yogabythedozen.com . I am also a stand-up comic. I tell a lot about myself on stage and some of which I know my mother wishes I wouldn’t say. Mostly swear words, she doesn’t like that but all in all my mother is just as proud of my yoga dvd as she is when I stand on stage telling a dirty joke. In fact my mother laughs the hardest and sits in the front row every time she is there.  I am so lucky to have her as a mom and I really don’t tell her enough.

I am a really great yoga teacher for kids and I owe that all to my mom being such a wonderful inspiration in my life. She has always supported my choices even if she didn’t like them. She never discouraged me from any of my dreams and there have been a lot.

I love you mom. I hope I can be half the woman you are. If I become a mother I hope I remember all that you have taught me and continue to teach me.
