MLO: SHERMAN: MALIBU'S ANIMAL GUARDIAN ANGEL
To many of LA's neediest animals, Sherman is a guardian angel. Technically, she is the proprietor of Sherman’s Place - Dog Grooming and Supplies, but the reality is that Sherman is a woman on a mission to save as many animals -- regardless of their species or breed -- from harm, hunger and often death. As she herself notes, she is "supposed" to be in business to make money, but sometimes winds up "on the other end of things" because of her unflagging dedication to making sure no animals are sacrificed on her watch. She is a regular at shelters and pounds, showing up on days when animals are euthanized, and swooping in at the last moment with a stay of execution. Sherman almost never has a pre-assigned home for the pets she saves. She worries about who will take them in after she ensures their safety. And so, it is rare to visit her shop and not see a selection of darling, furry friends who have just received a new lease on life.

Sherman is as special to Malibu as her home-town is to her. That she treasures most about Malibu is the beautiful open spaces, the wonderful people and pets. She is also quick to point out that, unlike many other affluent communities, Malibu is still home to many mom & pop stores, which adds an important dimension to the town. "Everone knows your name and people are friendly. They never think twice about lending each other a hand when needed," Sherman explains. And every now and then, it's Sherman who needs a hand -- like when someone dropped off an abandoned horse on her doorstep!

Sherman points out that "Malibu is famous for all the wrong reasons! It should be famous for its beautiful spaces, not for the famous people who live here." A perfect day for her is one in which all her clients and customers are happy and when there are no accidents on the highway.
(And yes, that is the name she goes by. Think of her as you would Madonna or Cher. She is a one-name wonder!)
