TASTYBABY BOOK CLUB: WHAT TO EAT BY MARION NESTLE

- Amy Forstadt, Contributing Writer
In her 2006 book, What to Eat, nutritionist Marion Nestle (also the author of Food Politics and Safe Food) explores the supermarket, aisle by aisle, interpreting labels, explaining the benefits of organic food, dissecting fish and seafood issues, and detailing the pros and cons (mostly cons) of the sugar, salt, fats and additives in processed foods. As far as grocery shopping goes, Nestle tells us that by sticking to the fresh bread, meats, produce and dairy periphery of the supermarket (and avoiding the evils of the processed-food inner aisles), we can find all the healthy nutrition we need.

MY GREEN AWAKENING

- Liane Weintraub, Editor-in-Chief
I don’t know about you, but when I attend fundraising events I’m usually supporting people, not causes. What I mean by that is that I generally turn out to show support to a particular organization because one of my friends is dedicated to its work. They are almost always excellent and worthy causes, but usually that one evening is the extent of my involvement.

LIANE HEARTS BILL CLINTON
- Liane Weintraub, Editor-in-Chief
I met Bill Clinton last night. I honestly did, and it was quite a thrill.
Now, let me explain: ever since Clinton left office, I have had more and more respect for how he chooses to devote his time and energy. At a time when our world is deep in crisis, Clinton always seems to hone in on the issues that are most crucial to the human existence: the AIDS pandemic, the global climate calamity and childhood obesity– a health disaster that’s reaching epic levels in America.

I HOPE YOU DANCE

- Zippora Karz, Contributing Health Writer
Dancing was in my family. My grandmother danced a solo act in Vaudeville and my mother folk-danced. So, when my mother heard about an amazing ballet teacher in the San Fernando Valley near our home, she suggested we try it and I agreed to try ballet lessons. My teacher Sheila understood the technical as well as the artistic demands required to be a ballerina. Sheila had always wanted to dance for George Balanchine but she had flat feet and couldn’t get en pointe, so she put all her passion into teaching. Her love was infectious and I fell in love with the experience of moving to music in a trained body. She was the one who knew I was suited for New York City Ballet and made sure I auditioned for their summer ballet program.

MERCURY IN RETROGRADE

- Liane Weintraub, Editor-in-Chief
One of the oddball things I remember doing as a child in school is playing with mercury. I can’t recall whether we broke open thermometers or not, but somehow we had those funny little silver balls rolling around in dishes. The teachers probably told us not to touch them, but I’m sure we poked at them with our fingers, dropped them on our skin and generally contaminated our young selves with the stuff.

DAVID IINO: DAD AND CHEF

- David Iino, Contributing Food Writer
As a working chef, Mother’s Day, unfortunately, has become a workday like most every other holiday. As a family try to celebrate holidays on days-off that are close to the holiday, we are usually a little early or a little late. Mother’s Day, like most holidays, is always a time of family. We usually spend it with my mom and dad, grandma, aunties, uncles, cousins, and now the next generation of kids. Needless to say, holidays get crazy with so many people!
