TASTY TALK: NIA LONG
1. You are one of our favorite funny ladies! In your off-screen life, do you consider yourself a comedienne, or do you have a stronger serious side?
I think I’m both. I definitely have a great sense of humor and always try to find the funny in the craziness of life. But when you have children you have to have a sense of humor because nothing goes the way you plan. I consider myself spontaneous but I also have a responsible side that makes sure things are handled and business is taken care of.
2. We love that you're such a proud mama, always sharing photos of your adorable son, Massai. Has being a parent changed your life and your approach to your career?
I have become more selective about spending time away now. If it’s a project that requires me to be away, I really need to love it.
3. Do you talk to Massai about preserving the environment? What planet-friendly activities are a part of your life?
We do talk about the environment. He’s involved in a program at school called Roots and Shoots where they learn about keeping our world green with recycling and conservation. They have a school trip planned to the recycling center… school is very conscious of the environment.
4. Would you say you're "into" food? Do you cook? What would be your family's ideal meal?
Yes I cook. I like to cook as long as I don’t feel like I have to cook.
Since I’m from the Islands, a typical meal includes Curry chicken, peas and rice, roti, and plantains.
5. You were born in Brooklyn, but grew up in LA. Does part of you feel like a "New Yorker?"
I like to say that my spirit and soul is Brooklyn and my lifestyle is California; So I’m a Brooklyn girl living the California life.
6. Is it difficult to work for long stretches away from home? How do you stay connected to Massai?
It is so hard to be away from him and I try to avoid it. He is at an age where they are introducing reading, writing and arithmetic so right now I generally just don’t leave. Four days is probably the longest and while I’m away we talk on the phone a lot.
7. Are you easy-going or more of a worrier? What keeps you up at night?
I am actually a great sleeper, so not much keeps me up at night. I love to sleep! I try not to worry about things I can’t control…I get spiritual and prayerful.
8. A strong, intelligent woman of color, you are a phenomenal role model for many people. Is that something you are comfortable with?
I don’t try to live my life to be recognized as a role model, but as a mom and as one of the premiere African-American women in Hollywood, it is important to set a positive example. if I can help the community or inspire another mom or actress, then I think that’s a great part of this whole opportunity.
9. And here's the question we ask everyone: what makes you "tasty?!"
My skin, my heart, and my openness to the unexpected…make me tasty!
